Neville Shulman Biography

Neville Shulman is involved with a number of charities and is an Ambassador of Action for Children. He was first awarded OBE (Officer of the British Empire) and then subsequently awarded CBE (Commander of the British Empire) presented to him by HM Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace for his combined expeditions and charitable fundraising. Neville is a writer and lecturer on Zen and one of his books is Zen in the Art of Climbing Mountains and there are Zen references in this novel.

Neville Shulman, CBE. FRGS. Is an international mountaineer, explorer. author, writer, lecturer as well as consultant and advisor to directors, producers and others working in film, television, theater and the Arts. He has received Credits on many major and epic films and is a consultant to Shepperton Film Studios and has a long association with Pinewood Film Studios.

Neville is a Fellow of a number of organizations including the Royal Geographical Society, the Scientific Exploration Society, the Explorers Club of New York, the Travellers Club of London, the Bhutan Society. He was made an Honorary Colonel in the Tennessee Army for his contributions to Music and the Arts. He is a Freeman of the City of London and a member of the Livery Company, The Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths. He continues his long standing involvements with numerous charities particularly Action for Children and following on from being a Vice President was then made an Ambassador for the charity. For his combined efforts in expeditions and exploration and charitable fundraising he was first made an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) and subsequently made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE): awarded to him by HM Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace.

He has many ties and involvements with the Arts and is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of the Arts and was made an Honorary Member of the International Theater Institute and also set up the International Institute of Dance and Theater and continues to present annual Awards for Excellence in International Theater and Excellence in International Dance. The International Theater Award for 2020 was presented to the acclaimed playwright Sir Tom Stoppard.

Neville gives lectures on mountaineering and exploration, philosophy and entertainment. He was a 2012 Olympics Torchbearer. Working closely with the Royal Geographical Society he has set up annual exploration and geographical research awards. Through the conservation organization Earthwatch he has set up annual international awards to assist young researchers and scientists in creating ongoing benefits to Nature. Additionally with the Scientific Exploration Society he created annual awards for filmmaking in exploration.

He is the author of several books including: Some Like It Cold, telling of his exploits through the Arctic to reach the North Pole and subsequently through the Antarctic to reach the South Pole and to enter the Scott Amundsen Polar Station; Climbing the Equator, On Top of Africa, Zen in Remotest New Guinea.

Neville continues to explore and travel extensively and his long tally of countries includes India, China, Russia, Outer Mongolia, Tibet, Bhutan, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Israel, Armenia and Azerbaijan. The majority of his expeditions are to raise funds for numerous charities: Neville covers personally all the expedition costs so that the charities receive 100% of all funds raised.
